トーランド教授が台湾で開催された国際会議で研究発表を行いました
2026年5月7日から9日にかけて，台湾・台中の東海大学（Tunghai University）において，2026 Taiwan Computer-Assisted Language Learning (TaiwanCALL) and Global Computer-Assisted Language Learning (GLoCALL) Joint Conference が開催されました。本会議は，コンピュータ支援言語学習（CALL）やICTを活用した言語教育に関する研究・実践を共有する国際会議です。
本会議において，国際文化学科のショーランド・トーランド教授が，“Universal Design for Learning in Practice: Digital Storytelling in a Japanese University EAL Course”（「実践における学びのユニバーサルデザイン：日本の大学英語科目におけるデジタル・ストーリーテリング」）というタイトルで研究発表を行いました。
発表の内容や現地の様子について，トーランド教授にお話を伺いました。
●今回のご発表の内容について
The presentation introduced classroom practices that incorporate AI-supported kamishibai storytelling and digital storytelling in university English courses for non-native English speakers. It also reported on the pedagogical potential of applying the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework to design lessons that foster students’ critical thinking, creativity, and digital literacy skills.
本発表では、非英語母語話者を対象とした大学英語授業において、AIを活用した紙芝居（かみしばい）型ストーリーテリングおよびデジタル・ストーリーテリングを取り入れた授業実践を紹介しました。また、Universal Design for Learning（UDL）フレームワークを応用し、学習者の批判的思考力、創造性、およびデジタル・リテラシーを育成する授業設計の可能性についても報告しました。
My presentation was very well received by conference participants. In addition, I had the opportunity to attend a wide range of high-quality workshops and presentation sessions, making this a worthwhile professional development experience. I learned a great deal about cutting-edge technologies such as generative AI and machine learning. Furthermore, the conference provided an excellent opportunity to strengthen professional connections with educators from various regions across Asia as well as Japan. I recently submitted a paper to an academic journal based on my presentation at the 2026 TaiwanCALL and GloCALL International Conference.
私の発表は、学会参加者から非常に高い評価を受けました。また、質の高いワークショップや発表セッションに幅広く参加する機会にも恵まれ、非常に有意義な専門能力開発の経験となりました。生成AIや機械学習などの最先端技術についても多くの知見を得ることができました。さらに、本学会はアジア各地域および日本の教育関係者との専門的なネットワークを強化する貴重な機会となりました。なお、私は2026年のTaiwanCALLおよびGloCALL国際会議での発表内容に基づき、学術論文を学術誌に投稿しました。

●台湾・台中の様子について
Another significant benefit of attending this conference was the chance to explore Taichung, the host city, and deepen my cultural understanding of Taiwan. Although Taichung is noticeably more bustling and less pedestrian-friendly than Taipei, I still found it an interesting city to visit. Overall, Taichung proved to be an excellent host city for an international academic conference.
本学会に参加したもう一つの大きな成果は、開催地である台中を訪れ、台湾に対する文化的理解を深めることができた点です。台中は台北と比べてより活気があり、歩行者にとってはやや移動しにくい都市ではありますが、それでも非常に興味深い訪問地でした。総じて、台中は国際学会の開催地として非常に優れた都市であると感じました。

6月21日（日）の鹿児島国際大学オープンキャンパス2026では，トーランド先生が「トラベルVlog:異文化を探索する新しい形」と題してミニ講義を行います。旅先の風景や人々との出会いを映像で伝える「トラベルVlog」は，異文化を身近に感じ，世界を新しい視点からとらえるきっかけになります。ミニ講義では，動画に込められたメッセージや，映像を通した異文化理解の面白さについて紹介します。
